From its elusive beginnings to its rarity, shungite presents us with a conundrum. Shungite is indeed a puzzling and mysterious gem, no one knows how it came to be, and it is only found in one place on earth. 

Shungite has been around for millennia, it was discovered in the 1700s in a remote region in northwestern Russia in the village of Shun'ga, and its name, shungite, is derived from the town's name. No one knows where it came from or how it came to be; many speculate that this deep black stone is a meteorite that impacted the earth long ago. Shungite deposits are found in an ancient rock formation about 2 billion years old. 

What we do know about shungite is that once it was introduced to the world, it quickly gained notoriety for possessing powerful healing powers.
